Coat tree made by steam bending
Coat tree
A Coat tree, one of first organizing/decluttering hacks, organizes outer garment wears and weather protection gear at the ingress/egress point of your home or office. A coat tree common design feature is a “hook” to hang coats and hats. A very modern to classic furniture design elements provided various support structures to hold the the tree’s hook.
The design form was inspired from the presidential office set design for the movie “Wild, Wild West”. A decor piece, sitting in the scene’s background, was a coat tree for six coats and umbrella stand. The light curve shape and metal/wood media mix provided the opportunity for a new adventure – and the opportunity to do more steam bending.
White ash’s steam bending properties provided the base material for this six feet tall coat tree. A 6.5 inches radius bend forms the bottom foot and top coat hanging knob of the main body’s three legs. To provide an umbrella storage area, the legs flare out to meet a 17 inches diameter spacer ring 30 inches above the floor. Copper rings and wire adds rigidity and strength to all intersections of the legs and spacer rings. A dodecagon ring tops the coat tree. This top ring holds 3 commercially available coat hooks and 3 hand-formed copper coat hooks.
