Cypress bed

This cypress bed’s design borrows different design elements from different commercially available beds.  It started with a potential customer providing a photograph from a web site that contained visual elements that he liked.  We worked with him to define a style, select the wood and narrow the design elements.  The interaction concluded with a creation of a full size model that was approved.

The Floridian customer like the suggestion that the bed be made in Cypress to reflect the “tropical vibe”.  A wood native to Florida, the oils in cypress’ heartwood resist decay from moisture exposure made it a natural choice for exterior exposures.  The golden brown to blonde color and prominent growth rings which create natural geometric pattern whenever exposed along any rounded edge also makes it good choice to create an unique piece of interior furniture.

This project demonstrates that furniture building does not require a rigid following of measured plans.  The bed essentially designed itself after the prototype set the starting visual form and established the location of the rail and post intersection.  The king size  bed convention dictated the length and width.  The crest rail design’s construction was simplified because parts could be cut, dry assembled and fitted to the design form instead of trying to create the pieces to exact size for a predetermined location on a plan.

Cypress with Linseed oil sealer, top coated with Waterlox resin varnish
